Wimberley started as a trading post settlement near Cypress Creek in 1848, the year Hays County was organized.

It was sold again in 1874 to Pleasant Wimberley and took on his name.

The application was granted, but the name shortened to Wimberley.

Wimberley is positioned at 29 59 44 N 98 06 03 W (29.995474, -98.100832), 28 miles (45 km) southwest of Austin and 46 mi (74 km) northeast of San Antonio.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the CDP had a total region of 16.1 sq mi (42 km2), all of it land.

Cypress Creek joins the Blanco River in Wimberley.

According to the Koppen climate classification system, Wimberley has a humid subtropical climate, Cfa on climate maps. Of the 1,576 homeholds, 27.2% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 31.7% were not families.

In the CDP, the populace was distributed as 21.5% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 22.5% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 22.3% 65 years of age or older.

Wimberley Public Schools are part of the Wimberley Independent School District.
