The populace was 6,121 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lubbock Metropolitan Statistical Area.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has an region of 5.5 square miles (14.3 km2), of which 5.5 square miles (14.2 km2) is territory and 0.039 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.56%, is water. According to the Koppen Climate Classification system, Slaton has a semi-arid climate, abbreviated "BSk" on climate maps. There were 2,565 housing units at an average density of 473.1 per square mile (182.7/km ).

In the city, the populace was spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 years of age or older.

The median income for a homehold in the town/city was $25,915, and the median income for a family was $31,224.

In 1912, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad, through reorganization now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe, opened a depot in Slaton.

The business advertised for "Young women, 18 to 30 years of age, of good moral character, attractive and intelligent, as waitresses in the Havey Eating Houses on the Santa Fe Railroad in the West." The downstairs hosts a small barns compilation museum. The West Texas Historical Association toured the Harvey House amid its 2009 annual meeting in Lubbock.

Several new art arcades and antique shops are on the square encircling City Hall.

The City of Slaton is served by the Slaton Independent School District.

The July 4th Festival takes place at the Slaton Park where region musicians perform on an outside stage.

Hosted by the Texas Air Museum Caprock Chapter the show takes place at the Slaton Municipal Airport.
