The town is titled from a ranch in that region named "Rancho Viejo" (Old Ranch).
Rancho Viejo may be encompassed as part of the Brownsville Harlingen Raymondville and the Matamoros Brownsville urbane areas.
Rancho Viejo is positioned at 26 2 18 N 97 33 16 W (26.038219, -97.554392). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town has a total region of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km2), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) of it is territory and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) of it (7.05%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,754 citizens , 705 homeholds, and 511 families residing in the town.
There were 705 homeholds out of which 29.5% had kids under the age of 18 living with them, 63.5% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female homeholder with no husband present, and 27.4% were non-families.
In the town, the populace was spread out with 23.3% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 26.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older.
The median income for a homehold in the town was $64,038, and the median income for a family was $73,036.
