Mercedes is positioned at 26 8 58 N 97 55 7 W (26.149315, -97.918675). According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 8.6 square miles (22 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22 km2) is territory and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (0.69%) is water.

Mercedes is known as "The Queen City of the Valley" or "La Reina del Valle".

The town/city of Mercedes was established September 15, 1907, by the American Rio Grande Land & Irrigation Company, and was incorporated March 8, 1909.

It is one of the earliest suburbs in the Rio Grande Valley, and the town/city jubilated its centennial in 2007.

Some sources[who?] state that the initial name given to the town/city was Diaz with respect to Porfirio Diaz, then president of Mexico.

Later it was retitled Mercedes Diaz with respect to the president's wife and from that, Mercedes became the Queen City.

This story, however, is historically inaccurate, given that neither of Diaz's two wives were titled Mercedes.

The Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets, owned by Chelsea Property Group which is a brand of Simon Property Group, opened on November 2, 2006. The town/city is roughly the geographical center of the Rio Grande Valley urban agglomeration and is positioned on Interstate 2/U.S.

The town/city is positioned near a primary Mexico United States border crossing making it accessible to the burgeoning middle class populace of Nuevo Leon and Tamaulipas.

Mercedes is divided between two school districts.

Eastern Mercedes is in the Mercedes Independent School District.

Western Mercedes is in the Weslaco Independent School District.

In addition, South Texas Independent School District, which is headquartered in Mercedes, serves magnet students in many Rio Grande Valley communities, including Mercedes.

The Science Academy of South Texas and South Texas High School for Health Professions, schools of STISD, are in Mercedes.

In 2015, the town/city joined other metros/cities in south Texas in support of the newly formed University of Texas Rio Grande Valley by adopting a resolution declaring August 31 as UTRGV day. Also, they recognized the college by installing a boot with the college logos right athwart the municipal town/city hall. One of many cowboy boots displayed throughout Mercedes Mercedes is home to the most unique Public Art universal in the state of Texas.

There are 30 handcrafted 5 1/2 foot tall cowboy boots dispersed throughout the city, each beautifully painted with different universities from around the state, nation and even Mexico.

"Buster" Brown, Republican State Senator from Texas Senate, District 17 (Lake Jackson) from 1981 to 2002, was born in Mercedes in 1940.

Jeff Wentworth, Republican State Senator from Texas Senate, District 25 (San Antonio) since 1993, was born in Mercedes in 1940.
