As of the 2010 census, the town/city population was 6,950. It is the fifth earliest town/city and the governmental center of county of Houston County, the earliest county in Texas. Monroe-Crook House in Crockett A family from Tennessee donated the territory for the town and titled it after Crockett, whom they had previously known.

Crockett was connected to Nacogdoches by stage service.
