The town/city is titled in honor of Patrick Cleburne, a Confederate General. Lake Pat Cleburne, the reservoir that provides water to the town/city and encircling area, is also titled after him.

In August 1886 the Texas Farmers' Alliance met at Lee's Academy and adopted a seventeen-point political resolution, generally known as the Cleburne Demands, which was the first primary document of the agrarian revolt occurring at the end of the late nineteenth century. In 1900 Cleburne was the site of the beginning convention of the Texas State Federation of Labor. Cleburne was primarily an agricultural center and governmental center of county until the Santa Fe Railroad opened a primary facility there in 1898.

It is the second most crowded city in Johnson County (slightly less crowded than Burleson). On May 15, 2013, Cleburne was hit by a powerful tornado that cut a mile-wide path through part of the town/city and damaged about 600 homes and two schools.

According to the United States Enumeration Bureau, the town/city has a total region of 30.5 square miles (79 km2), of which 27.8 square miles (72 km2) is territory and 2.7 square miles (7.0 km2) (8.77%) is water.

In the city, the populace was spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older.

Near Cleburne is Cleburne State Park, positioned 10 miles (16 km) from the town/city limits.

The Johnson County Chisholm Trail Museum is an outside museum positioned at the site of Wardville, the initial governmental center of county of Johnson County, established in 1854.
