It is positioned approximately 16 miles (26 km) southwest of downtown Dallas and is situated along the easterly shore of Joe Pool Lake and Cedar Hill State Park.

Cedar Hill is a suburb of Dallas and is part of the Best Southwest area, which includes the close-by cities of De - Soto, Duncanville, and Lancaster.

Early in its history, Cedar Hill lay along a branch of the Chisholm Trail and served as the temporary governmental center of county of Dallas County.

In the 1950s, Cedar Hill became home to what was then known as Hill Tower.

At 880 feet above sea level, Cedar Hill's altitude made it a desirable locale for installation of the broadcast antennas.

Today, Cedar Hill has the highest concentration of radio and tv communication antennas in the county with 14 towers. Perhaps because of the rocky surface and hilly terrain of the Cedar Hill area, the prairie remnants at Penn Farm railwayand are maintained today. Penn Farm Agricultural History Center was created from the remnants of Penn Farm, which date back to the 1850s. The center is positioned inside Cedar Hill State Park.

It was designed to educate citizens about early life in Cedar Hill and to demonstrate how human invention rendered the greatest impact on the tallgrass prairie once prominent in this area.

Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center was assembled as a partnership between Cedar Hill and the National Audubon Society.

In 2015, Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center partnered with the Cedar Hill Independent School District on a study linking outside science education to academic performance.

Cedar Hill manages and maintains 32 park properties including 6 improve parks, 17 neighborhood parks, 1 special purpose park, 3 nature preserves, and 4 greenbelts. Cedar Hill presently has over 45 miles of multi-purpose, integrated trails and bikeways. Most recent additions include Pleasant Run Trail, Lake Ridge Hike and Bike Trail, and Red Oak Creek Trail. DORBA Trail is the longest trail positioned in Cedar Hill State Park and is a shared use hike and bike trail.

The trail was created through the accomplishments of the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association, hence the trail name, and the Cedar Hill State Park management.

According to the Koppen Climate Classification system, Cedar Hill has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. This type of weather is typical throughout the densely populated parts of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex.
